Sirius Shipping has ordered four 7999 dwt oil/chemical tankers, which will be built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Dingheng. The vessels will be equipped with a 420kWh hybrid battery to enable peak shaving on both the main engine and auxiliary engines.

These new vessels, designed by Sirius in collaboration with FKAB, will be 119.9m long, have a 19.4m beam and 7.23m draft, and will have MarineLine-coated tanks so they can handle 11 grades of cargo. The Ice Class 1A vessels will have a ‘Take me home’ functionality and an estimated EEDI 40% below the 2025 phase 3 requirements.

To support these hybrid operations, a shore power system of 1,000kW will be installed. This will enable the vessels to perform zero-emission loading and discharging in port.

This decarbonization process forms part of Sirius Shipping’s Evolution 8K initiative, which will see the renewal of the entire Sirius fleet. The new vessels are an update on the company’s Saturnus and Mercurius tankers and will be equipped with highly efficient hybrid propulsion and other technology to comply with future regulations.

With this order, Sirius now has a total of six vessels on order – two 15,000 dwt vessels due for delivery in 2026 and the four 7,999 dwt vessels, which are due for delivery in 2027 and 2028.

Jonas Backman, CEO of Sirius Shipping, said, “A lot of hard work has finally paid off and we are very excited. These vessels are an important step toward our vision – to become the long-term first choice, for our colleagues, customers and for society. The vessels will of course be built to Sirius standard and incorporate the latest technology for future compliance.”

In related news, K Shipbuilding recently delivered its first LNG dual-fuel medium-range (MR) tanker, Arctic Tern, representing a significant step forward in the Korean shipyard’s capability to build sustainable ships. Click here to read the full story.
