Corvus Energy signs contracts for new automated battery facility in Norway

Corvus Energy has announced that contracts for the location and production equipment for its new fully automated battery production factory in Bergen, Norway have been finalized and signed. The new facility will be situated at Midtun in Bergen, about one mile (1.6km) south of the city center. The supplier chosen for the production equipment is Intek Engineering of Raufoss, Norway; the factory will be fully operational in Q3 2019. The total investment is approximately US$9.3m financed through equity funding and loans from DNB and Innovation Norway. According to Geir Bjørkeli, CEO of Corvus Energy, the Bergen location was selected for three reasons: “First, feedback from customers stating the importance of being close to the market; second, co-location as Corvus Energy already has its European operation located in Bergen; and third, to contribute to the world-leading maritime cluster in Bergen.” The automated production was developed through a concept study conducted with Sintef Manufacturing and will enable increased flexibility and scalability in addition to series production and implementation of new products. “State-of-the-art production equipment in combination with digitization and innovative production techniques makes this a unique solution with a total capacity of 400MWh,” said Gisle Frydenlund, EVP, operations and projects at Corvus Energy. Meanwhile, Corvus Energy’s existing factory in Canada is also being upgraded with a semi-automated production line to increase capacity. In addition to the new Bergen facility, this upgrade will increase the company’s overall production capacity eight-fold.
