Northern Lights CO2  carriers to feature Svanehøj pumps

Danish marine pump company Svanehøj has been awarded a contract by TGE Marine to supply the pump systems for two LNG-fueled CO2 carriers that will transport liquid CO2  to the Northern Lights storage facilities in Norway.

For the project, Svanehøj will supply two deepwell cargo pumps of 15m to each ship and aims to showcase its multi-gas technology as the customer also wants the pumps to be utilized for the handling of LPG natural gas.

The first two CO2  carriers are currently being built by Dalian Shipbuilding in China and are expected to be completed and ready for operations in 2024. Each vessel will have a liquid CO2 capacity of 7,500m3.

Northern Lights is currently developing the infrastructure to transport CO2  from industrial emitters located in Norway and other European countries by ship to a receiving terminal in western Norway for intermediate storage. This will then be transported via pipeline for permanent storage in a geological reservoir 2,600m under the seabed.

“We have won the order through our long-standing partner, TGE Marine, which designs and delivers complete Cargo Handling Systems for the CO2  carriers,” said Thomas Uhrenholt Nielsen, sales director, cargo gas, Svanehøj. “TGE has chosen our deepwell cargo gas pumps, which they are very familiar with from numerous LPG tankers.”

“Thanks to our experience from the relatively few CO2  ships built so far, we are part of the dialog on several of the upcoming carbon capture and storage projects (CCS),” explained Nielsen. “CCS is a focus area in our business strategy, and the order from TGE for Northern Lights is therefore of great strategic importance. This could be a big market for us within the next few years.”
