Design, engineering and equipment will be supplied by Kongsberg Maritime to three marine gas oil (MGO)/biofuel and methanol-ready tanker ships under construction for Tärntank, a Danish tanker operator. To increase the vessel’s environmental credentials, wind assist technology will be fitted in addition to Tärntank’s proprietary battery-powered hybrid solution.

In addition to design and engineering, the supply contract, valued at Nkr120m (US$11.5m), will see Kongsberg deliver steering gear, rudders, controllable pitch propellers, tunnel thrusters and thruster control systems, integrated automation systems, propulsion control systems and deck machinery.

The new vessels will all features methanol-powered engines, wind-assisted propulsion, hybrid battery systems and on-shore power. It is estimated that the installation of wind-assist technology will reduce emissions by up to 19%. The new-build tankers will benefit from an Energy Efficiency Design Index close to 40% below the 2025 Phase 3 requirements.

“This contract marks Kongsberg Maritime as a front runner in designing low emission and sustainable solutions for the shipping industry,” said Rune Ekornesvåg, sales director ship design, Kongsberg Maritime.

“With these methanol and wind assistance-ready vessels, we take a big step forward in our journey as the forerunner in environmentally efficient and safe shipping,” added Claes Möller, chief executive officer of Tärntank Ship Management.

The low emission, 15,000 DWT tankers are being built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, in Yangzhou, and are scheduled for delivery in 2025.
