German research vessel to use electrical package from Wärtsilä

Maritime technology company Wärtsilä will supply and integrate an electrical system package for a 125m-long new-build German research vessel named the Meteor IV.

Contracted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany, the vessel is to be constructed by the Meyer-Fassmer Special Shipbuilding Division consortium. Wärtsilä will be responsible for carrying out design work during the engineering phase, and fulfilling installation and connection requirements at the manufacturing shipyards in northern Germany.

As part of its supply scope, Wärtsilä will deliver design integration of onboard electrical systems as well as switchboards, electrical distribution and drive systems, generators, lighting and energy supply systems. The research vessel will be fitted with an integrated navigation and automation system, and the bridge consoles and solid-state radar will also be provided by Wärtsilä.

The Meteor IV will conduct international and interdisciplinary climate and environmental research missions in the Atlantic.

We are, therefore, happy to continue this good cooperation for this highly complex research vessel.”
