ePropulsion transforms bamboo rafts into customized electric boats

Marine electric propulsion system provider ePropulsion has been contracted to transform bamboo rafts on the Li river in China into fully customized electric boats.

Electrified propulsion and thruster

The project is in the first phase of operation and has already seen 700 rafts electrified, with plans for the rest of the fleet to be converted soon. These electric propulsion systems – known as ‘longtail motors’ – feature a fully integrated design with a digital display screen, throttle handle module, cooling system, propeller and transmission shaft. They deliver a maximum power of 9kW.

The thruster is installed at the tail of the raft. The tail shaft is then tilted, inserted into the water and propelled by the propeller. The motors have been designed to be safe, reliable and easy to use. The bamboo raft operators have received extensive training on how to use the electric propulsion systems effectively, laying the foundation for future operations.

Efficiency and noise reduction

The rafts also offer a large-capacity battery system to meet the long-term endurance requirements of operating in the scenic area, and a newly developed propeller design to boost efficiency and hydrodynamic performance.

At full power, the ePropulsion electric propulsion systems offer a minimal noise level below 60dB. This is intended to facilitate a comfortable on-the-water experience for tourists. Additionally, the boats’ design blends modern technology with the long-established culture of the bamboo rafts.

Sustainable transformation
