Praxis Automation Technology and Frydenbø Industri partner on in-line hybrid propulsion systems

Praxis Automation Technology and Frydenbø Industri have signed a contract for the repeat order of five in-line hybrid propulsion systems for aquaculture workboats that will operate in Norway.

The collaboratively developed propulsion solution is scalable and can be used for the electrification of existing or new-build vessels. The serial hybrid-electric propulsion system consists of two main diesel engines and controllable pitch propellers, with each shaft benefitting from a 50kW electric propulsion motor/generator mounted between the engines and gearboxes.

The system’s propulsion motor is powered by two 60kWh battery energy storage systems that have been approved by DNV-GL. The batteries are charged using the propulsion motor as a shaft generator. Alternatively, a shore power connection can be used to charge the batteries.

“The in-line hybrid propulsion system is a fine example of what can be achieved by a good partnership,” said Per Jarle Røyrvik, CEO of Frydenbø Industri. “Frydenbø Industri is well known as a propulsion system integrator for mechanical propulsion systems. Thanks to the close cooperation with Praxis, we have been able to develop an innovative new in-line hybrid propulsion system. Our customers are more than satisfied with the system performance and the reduction in fuel consumption.”
