Technology group Wärtsilä has inaugurated its new Hybrid Centre, claimed to be the first of its kind in the world. The facility is designed to enable further development and deployment of the Wärtsilä HY hybrid power module; to familiarize customers with the technology; and to train crews and provide hands-on experience for technicians. Located in Trieste, Italy, the facility comprises an engine, batteries, power drives, a propeller load simulator utilizing an electric motor, a power take off/in motor generator and energy management system. According to the company, testing has already been carried out on Wärtsiläs patented electric start-up procedure, utilizing power from batteries to deliver a smokeless start of the main engine. In addition to being used to validate hybrid technologies and simulate operational data from the field, the center will see customer groups learn the technical aspects of the Wärtsilä HY. Additionally, the energy generated by the center will be fed to the factory grid to provide sustainable power to the companys production facilities Wärtsiläs Smart Marine approach to delivering greater efficiencies, improved safety and enhanced sustainability is once again demonstrated with this innovative Hybrid Centre, said Stefan Wiik, VP, marine power solutions, Wärtsilä.
