Wärtsilä has secured a contract to supply cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for two midsize ammonia-fueled gas carriers.
The vessels, each with a capacity of 51,350m³, are being built at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China. They will be owned by a joint venture between Navigator Gas and Norway-based Amon Maritime.
The order was booked in the first quarter of 2026, with equipment deliveries scheduled for the third quarter of 2027.
The vessels will primarily transport liquid ammonia but will also be capable of carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Wärtsilä’s systems are designed to support ammonia as a marine fuel for two-stroke and four-stroke engines, enabling dual-fuel operation.
As the maritime sector seeks to reduce emissions, ammonia is being explored as a carbon-free fuel alternative. The integration of cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems compatible with ammonia is intended to support this transition.
Hans Jakob Buvarp, sales manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, said, “Wärtsilä Gas Solutions is a market leader in cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for medium-sized gas carrier vessels. This order further strengthens our position and is yet another proof point of executing our strategy focused on shaping the decarbonization of marine.”
