Damen acquires Skoonbox to reduce yard emissions

Damen Shipyards is to use the Skoonbox multi-purpose battery container to reduce emissions in its yards.

Measuring 6m long, the Skoonbox contains 314 lithium batteries, equating to 638kWh of renewable energy. The battery container was previously used for applications within the Amsterdam Port Area, in addition to being installed onboard a barge to supply clean power to an array of vessels.

Claimed as the world’s first maritime-certified battery container, the Skoonbox from Skoon Energy will be used as a renewable power source at Damen Shipyard’s sites where conventional diesel generators or ships’ engines are currently utilized.

The Skoonbox is Damen’s first step toward a sustainable battery network for mobile and temporary applications. In the future, Skoon Energy aims to provide the solution to customers globally.

“The Skoonbox and the clean energy systems coming in its wake are opening up tremendous opportunities for us to reduce our ecological footprint and those of our customers,” commented Vincent de Maat, sales manager at Damen Shipyards Group. “This is a sustainable replacement for diesel generators but it can also be used as a green form of shore power, allowing ships berthed at our repair yards to turn off their onboard engines. That saves a lot of emissions.”

“Our focus is on developing Skoon Sharing, the software platform that brings together both local and international supply and demand for mobile, sustainable energy solutions,” explained Peter Paul van Voorst tot Voorst, the founder and CEO of Skoon Energy. “The Skoonbox experience has provided us with a tremendous amount of indispensable data and insights.”
