EST-Floattech battery system chosen by METS Technology for Swedish vessel retrofit

The Octopus Series battery system from EST-Floattech has been selected by METS Technology and Ö-Varvet for retrofit on board the MS Hamnen, a Gothenburg Port Security vessel.

The Swedish vessel, which was built in 1979, will have its diesel engine removed and replaced with a parallel hybrid system with power take off/power take in functionality. The Ö-Varvet Shipyard will be responsible for carrying out the rebuild.

“We are proud to deliver our new Octopus Series product to METS Technology and contribute again to the transition to zero-emission shipping and Gothenburg’s goals of emission-free sailing,” commented Walter van der Pennen, CCO, EST-Floattech.

The Octopus High Energy Battery System supplied by EST-Floattech has been tailored to meet the space and energy requirements of the security vessel. Working in partnership with METS, the Ö-Varvet Shipyard has designed a suitable battery compartment on board the vessel for installation of the modules. Designed for flexibility, the battery compartment has additional space for extra battery capacity if the shipowner requires it in the future.

EST-Floattech’s batteries will enable the vessel to sail for a minimum of four hours at 6kts and will deliver the energy needed for the boat’s hotel load and bow thruster.

“Fitting a battery system is often about weight and dimensions. Especially when it comes to a refit, the available space is limited. However, the Octopus system offers great flexibility to make optimal use of the available space,” commented Jelle Meindertsma, sales manager, EST-Floattech.
