Neuland, the first of three hybrid ships commissioned by the Port of Hamburg, has been christened by Hamburg’s Deputy Mayor Katharina Fegebank.

Battery-powered ferry

The new ferry is equipped with battery technology, which enables emission-free maneuvering in the port (the batteries are charged twice a day at the Hadag operating system). In addition, the ferry is also powered by a Stage V combustion engine, which emits significantly less CO2.

The new battery ships have a capacity of up to 250 passengers, and feature a larger multifunctional area and an “optimized internal staircase” providing access to the upper deck through an adapted design concept.

Sustainable operations

“We are pleased to welcome the Neuland in their home port! This makes Hadag’s efforts for sustainable mobility visible to the people of Hamburg – and soon also tangible,” explained Martin Lobmeyer, member of the board of Hadag, when the vessel arrived in port in July.

Tanja Cohrt, head of Hadag, said, “Our new hybrid ferries are a significant step towards low-emission and low-noise public transport on the water. We are proud that Hadag is leading by example here.”

In related news, Brittany Ferries’ LNG-electric hybrid vessel, named Saint-Malo, has begun sea trials ahead of its transit to Europe in November 2024. Click here to read the full story.
