The King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division in Washington state has selected aluminum vessel builder Moose Boats to build a custom diesel-electric hybrid patrol boat.

Key partners

King County Sheriff’s Office was able to purchase this vessel by using Government Service Agency (GSA) discounted pricing with a grant made possible by Washington State’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA) funding.

This vessel build will be a collaboration between Hamilton Jet, which has designed the electric propulsion system, Volvo Penta and Moose Boats, with battery technology from Corvus Energy.

Technological capabilities

The model M1 will be 46’ long and powered by two Volvo Penta D11-625HP diesel engines integrated with in-line twin Danfoss electric motors. Corvus Dolphin Power batteries will enable the vessel to run solely under electric propulsion for up to two hours at 5 kts. Integrated diesel drive engines will act to replenish batteries at a rapid rate with an electric motor boost to enhance upper-end speed performance.

Hamilton AVX Express controls will enable tight-quarter manoeuvrability through joystick controls with jet anchoring capabilities, the company says. This system also includes a handheld remote that will enable the vessel to be piloted from different places within the confines of the cabin. Raymarine Electronics will integrate radar, chart-plotter, AIS and depth sounder technology, as well as a rear-facing camera. A separate tow sonar will have monitoring capability within the climate-controlled pilot house. Other equipment includes ICOM VHF radios and department radios.

In related news, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) recently issued an expression of interest (EOI) for design and development proposals for its electric patrol craft, as part of efforts to decarbonize and digitalize maritime operations. Click here to read the full story.
