Seawing kite system to be installed on Electric Power Development vessel

Following a collaborative decision, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Electric Power Development (J-Power) will install the Seawing – an automated kite system which uses wind power for additional propulsion – on board the 88,000dwt Corona Citrus coal carrier.

The vessel, which is owned by J-Power, will be fitted with the Seawing system, a kite which can be deployed and stored automatically for assistance with propulsion. The Seawing system collects and analyzes weather data and marine data on a real-time basis and uses the information to optimize performance and enhance safety.

Following the installation of the Seawing, the duo anticipates that the vessel’s CO2  emissions will be reduced by at least 20%. The project aligns itself with K Line’s ambitions and initiatives to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction target.

The 230m-long Corona Citrus is already fitted with a ballast water treatment system to protect maritime ecosystems and an SOx  scrubber to eliminate sulfur oxides emitted via the exhaust.
