EXPO NEWS Day 1: Innovative fuel cell technology

Ricardo (Booth 9090) has chosen Electric and Hybrid Marine Expo 2024 to showcase its multi-stack hydrogen fuel cell solution. The cutting-edge multimegawatt hydrogen fuel cell technology is one of the solutions Ricardo has designed and engineered to support future decarbonization across the maritime industry.

The technology has been developed by Ricardo as part of the Sustainable Hydrogen Powered Shipping (sHYpS) project, in which the company is applying its world-leading expertise in the hydrogen value chain to implement innovative hydrogen technologies. Ricardo is the fuel cell system partner in the project, which includes the specification, design, build and test of a ~500kW gross, 375kW net power fuel cell module (RFC500) and the design of a 40ft (12.2m) containerized multimegawatt powerplant that combines the outputs of several fuel cell modules.

The module, recently given Approval in Principle by Lloyd’s Register, is undergoing testing at Ricardo’s purpose-built hydrogen and fuel cell testing facilities at its Shoreham Technical Centre in the UK.

Visitors to the show can catch Ricardo expert Trevor Downes take to the stage at the expo at 9:40am on Wednesday, June 19 as part of the ‘Alternative fuels and energy sources for marine propulsion’ session, where he will discuss the sHYpS project and fuel cell technology in more detail.

‘Ricardo is continuing to invest in its hydrogen technology and testing capabilities in response to the high level of interest from customers in the maritime, aerospace and off-highway sectors for the hydrogen services that we provide,” Andrew Ennever, global head of fuel cells, Ricardo, told Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology International on the first day of the show.

“These sectors have been considered hard to decarbonize and we know from conversations with customers that they face complex changes and challenges based not only on regulatory or legislative requirements but also on pressures from investors and consumers to decarbonize their operations,” Ennever continued.

“The shipping industry in particular is facing considerable challenges to find a solution to achieve zero-emission navigation in line with future global regulatory targets. Our technology represents a significant achievement in our progress to support our maritime customers with a solution to deliver on their decarbonization strategies. We have been very encouraged by the significant interest in our high power density, 375kW, marine fuel cell module that we are exhibiting on our booth for the first time, as well as the informed questions about how our modular solution and broader hydrogen fuel cell capability can be applied to their fleets or operations.”
