Visitors to AMT are among the first to experience Volvo Penta’s new IPS Hybrid propulsion system. Designed specifically for demanding duty cycles, the fully integrated hybrid electric platform brings together efficiency, control, safety and uptime in a complete helm-to-propeller package.
The system, which is ideal for passenger ferries, coast guard vessels, offshore crew transfer vessels, short sea and river transportation, and work boats, has been developed with optimizing uptime as a priority. By delivering a fully integrated helm-to-propeller package through one supplier, the system helps reduce complexity across installation, operation and service. Propulsion, batteries, controls and energy management are designed to work together as one cohesive package. This gives operators a clearer maintenance path, fewer interface touchpoints and one point of responsibility across the full system.
The system features Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) platform, which combines propulsion and energy management into one operator interface, providing a real-time overview of energy use, charging, battery status and power flow, alongside joystick driving and assisted docking, as well as a new 24-in TAD (type approved display). This integrated control experience helps reduce workload in demanding operating environments such as tight harbors, dock-and-go operations, or when working close to infrastructure.
The Volvo Penta IPS Hybrid has been developed for commercial duty cycles with operating modes tailored to the realities of professional marine operations. Selectable modes including Pure Electric, Hybrid Electric, Hybrid Fuel and Cross-over allow operators to adapt performance according to vessel activity – from low-speed maneuvering and harbor approach to transit and higher-load operations.
“We’ve had a lot of interest [in the IPS Hybrid],” said Dennis Eijking, marine application engineer, Volvo Penta Europe. “What we are seeking to achieve here at the show is to ensure direct involvement at the design stage of the vessel. We’ve made the right first contacts for that – where we have been invited to have a look at the plans for vessels under construction.”
