SFK and Holland Shipyards sign contract for two further sustainable vessels

Having delivered a new-build ferry to Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK) in 2020 and four further vessels shortly afterward, the Holland Shipyards Group (HSG) has recently signed a new contract with the company to build a hybrid ferry and an all-electric ferry.

A 32.4m-long Laboe hybrid ferry will benefit from a hybrid propulsion system that can be powered by generators or battery packs. To ensure the vessel has a longer range on battery power alone, the ferry will be installed with two 272kWh battery packs – a larger capacity than the previously delivered ferries from HSG. The ferry will have capacity for 300 people.

The second vessel, named the Dietrichsdorf, is an all-electric ferry with a total installed battery capacity of 1,092kWh. Measuring 24.9m long, the ferry will carry up to 140 people. As with the DĂĽsternbrook and Wellingdorf sister vessels, the new-build will be fitted with an automated mooring system that uses electrohydraulically operated mooring hooks on both sides of the vessel.

Over the past few years, HSG has provided SFK with five green ferries, enabling the company to offer sustainable transport solutions to passengers in Kiel, Germany. The design of the ferries is the same as the vessels delivered earlier in 2022.
