Shift Clean Energy to provide energy storage system for inland waterway passenger vessel

Shift Clean Energy (Shift) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) have formed a partnership that will result in Shift powering the shipyard’s first all-electric ferry. The zero-emission vessel – designed by GRSE – will use Shift’s energy storage system (ESS) technology. Development of the ferry will be undertaken by Technology Ventures Middle East (TV-ME) and Marine Electricals, with both being responsible for electrical integration of the vessel.

The New Generation Electric Ferry is an inland waterway passenger vessel that has been commissioned by the Government of West Bengal’s Department of Transport as part of its mission to decarbonize the region’s marine sector.

The vessel is the first all-electric ferry developed by GRSE and only the second electric ferry to operate in India. Designed to transport passengers along central waterways, the ferry has capacity for up to 150 passengers and will make around 40 trips each day along its route.

“India’s inland waterways provide hugely valuable routes for both passengers and trade,” explained Brent Perry, CEO of Shift Clean Energy. “Decarbonizing the vessels operating on them isn’t only necessary for their survival but is an imperative step to helping them thrive. This fully electric vessel is a milestone moment for the country’s emissions reduction efforts – and we’re thrilled to play a crucial role.”

Compared with conventional diesel-fueled vessels, Shift’s ESS technology is estimated to reduce operational costs by 20-30%. The ferry will feature twin-screw propellers and a catamaran aluminum hull to enhance maneuverability and deliver a speed of up to 10kts. Solar panels will be delivered by Shift Energy to provide a renewable energy source. The ferry is scheduled for delivery to Calcutta in May 2023.
