Classification society DNV has awarded Yanmar Power Solutions type approval for its maritime hydrogen fuel cell system, the companies announced at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg.
The approval confirms that Yanmar’s GH-FC series complies with DNV’s rules and guidelines, which the companies say will allow shipbuilders, system integrators and vessel operators to adopt the technology with greater confidence and a reduced certification burden on future projects.
Yanmar Power Solutions, a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, said the certification marks a step in moving its maritime hydrogen fuel cell technology from domestic deployment in Japan toward broader international commercial adoption.
Masaru Hirose, president and representative director of Yanmar Power Solutions, said the type approval represents a major milestone in the company’s efforts to bring hydrogen-powered solutions to the marine market.
“Building on our operational experience in Japan, we aim to support customers around the world in their transition to zero-emission operations and realize sustainable maritime transportation,” Hirose said.
Eric Tigelaar, department manager of the commercial marine department at Yanmar Europe, said the certification strengthens the company’s ability to support customers across Europe and beyond who are looking for practical routes to decarbonization.
“The GH-FC series combines easy installation, operational flexibility, modularity and environmental performance, making it an attractive solution for a wide range of vessel applications,” Tigelaar stated.
Olaf Drews, head of engines and pressurized equipment at DNV Maritime, said the award continues DNV’s cooperation with Yanmar. “Every step demonstrates the growing maturity of hydrogen fuel cell technology and continues to build confidence in the market and showcase its readiness for broader commercial applications.
