Ingeteam to supply two ro-ro vessels with hybrid electric propulsion system

Ingeteam has signed a contract with China-based Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore to deliver the engineering, production, commissioning and sea trials of hybrid electric propulsion systems for two icebreaking ro-ro vessels.

Owned by Swedish Wallenius SOL, the 241.7m vessels will feature two type C LNG tanks and have a top sailing speed of up to 20kts ,with a 5,800 lane-meter capacity, and are set to be the world’s largest and most powerful ro-ro ships. Being deployed into harsh operational zones in European sulfur-emission-controlled shipping routes, the pair of vessels will be built to meet Finnish-Swedish ice class winterization standards, along with running on an LNG fuel-gas supply system to meet strict international requirements. When operating in ports, the vessel will run on green electricity from an onshore connection or LNG.

The ships’ powertrains will have two propulsion shaft-lines, each one consisting of a slow speed two-stroke main engine with an inline directly driven PTI/PTO permanent magnet shaft generator.

Ingeteam’s supply package includes: two Ingedrive LV400 multidrive frequency converters with active front ends, a shaft generator inverter, DC inverter cabinets; and two INDAR permanent magnet shaft generators. The company will undertake all engineering aspects of the build process, alongside workshop testing and sea trials.

The vessels’ systems have been prepared to take on hybrid battery packs and an energy management system for increased efficiency in the future. By providing energy reserves it will decrease running time for auxiliary engines, by reducing emissions and lowering service and maintenance costs.
