Corvus to supply coastal cargo carrier ESS to Westcon Power and Automation

Corvus Energy has been selected by Westcon Power and Automation (WPA) to supply Arriva Shipping with a new lithium-ion battery-based energy storage system (ESS) to be used on a new hybrid coastal cargo vessel, currently being built at Dayang Offshore Equipment, China.

Based on Marine Design and Consulting’s MDC 1309 Ecolution design, energy efficiency has been a large part of the ship’s design phase due to the vessel featuring a large 1,500kWh battery pack, an electric propulsion system and an updated hull design to improve fuel efficiency.

The improved powertrain will enable the ship to enter harbors, berth and unberth, sail and undertake all cargo operations while producing zero emissions. Compared with existing vessels without hybrid technology, the company estimates that fuel consumption will be reduced by 20%, equating to around 400 tonnes of fuel, and 1,200 tonnes of CO2 , totaling the same emissions as 450 passenger cars.

Halvard Hauso, chief commercial officer at Corvus Energy, said, “WPA are highly skilled and experienced electrical system integrators, and our close partnership with them in designing and delivering these innovative solutions is key to accelerating the adoption of energy storage systems.”

The vessel is set to be delivered in the second half of 2020 to a shipyard in Norway before it begins operations in areas of Northern Europe.
