MAN Engines has unveiled what it calls the modular MAN Smart Hybrid Experience, a series of hybrid propulsion packages that it says can be tailored to customers’ individual needs. According to the company, it represents a versatile solution that will enable multiple combinations of combustion and electric propulsion to aid the integration of hybrid systems in leisure and commercial craft.

MAN says that depending on the customer’s desired operating mode, the system can be focused on performance, comfort or efficiency.

“MAN Engines offers each and every customer a tailored solution for their specific hybrid needs,” said Matthias Schreiber, head of MAN Engines. Acting as a systems supplier, MAN says it will support customers along the entire process chain, from the planning and concept phase to the development work and on to the technical implementation of complex drive components as well as batteries and power electronics.

This approach, says MAN, provides shipyards with a holistic system from a single source, coupled with an extensive network including service stations in all major ports across the globe. “The MAN Smart Hybrid Experience represents the next level of mobility, building on the familiar reliability and sustainability that MAN Engines is known for,” added Schreiber.

With the system, numerous drive and operating profiles can be set up efficiently. These include economical driving and boost modes, which the company says combine the advantages of a conventional drive system with the latest possibilities afforded by electric motors and batteries.
