Schottel to provide medium-size rudder propellers for Hegemann V dredger

A new trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) for German company Detlef Hegemann Aktiengesellschaft, named the Hegemann V, is to be equipped with Schottel rudder propellers.

The propulsion system for the Hegemann V will consist of two Schottel SRP 270 rudder propellers (referred to by Schottel as RudderPropellers), outputting 840kW each. Both feature fixed-pitch propellers with a diameter of 1.85m. The azimuth thrusters will be driven by diesel-electric systems to meet strict emission regulations.

The vessel, currently scheduled for delivery by July 2022, has been developed by Kooiman Engineering in collaboration with Hegemann Dredging and will be crewed by eight people. It features a suction pipe on the starboard side and an inboard dredge pump, enabling the vessel to fill the 1,500m³ hold with silt or sand. When carrying out maintenance in ports and waterways, it will be able to load up to 1,930m³ with lower densities.

Unloading can be carried out through a row of bottom doors or pumped out by one or two dredge pumps connected in series either with discharge connections on both sides of the vessel or via a bow connection.

The vessel is currently under construction by the Kooiman Marine Group in the Netherlands and has been designed to undertake a variety of dredging activities in a specific set of locations. Measuring 75.9m long and 15.8m wide, the ship will be capable of operation in narrow rivers.
