Siemens Gamesa takes delivery of hydrogen-ready service operation vessel

The delivery of a hydrogen-ready service operation vessel (SOV) named the REM Energy has been announced by Siemens Gamesa.

The vessel is the latest addition to the company’s fleet and features a hydrogen-ready propulsion system. Once a green hydrogen economy is established in Germany, the REM Energy will be capable of running on the sustainable fuel. Prior to the fuel’s availability, the vessel will be powered by efficient diesel generators. Additionally, the ship is ready for the installation of a 12MW battery to enable zero-emission operations with the aid of offshore charging.

The vessel benefits from azimuth thrusters that can be rotated 360° around the vertical axis, resulting in the REM Energy being extremely agile. This ensures a high level of safety for ship and crew when moving between wind turbines in rough conditions.

At 90m long and approximately 20m wide, the SOV has the capacity to carry 75 offshore service technicians and 24 crew members for over a month before having to return to port.

Siemens Gamesa took delivery of the REM Energy from the Norwegian shipyard Green Yard Kleven on December 3, 2021. The company has chartered the vessel for four years and it will be operated by REM Energy AS.

“We are taking the first step in getting ready to cut our emissions in offshore service operations,” said Jonas Pagh Jensen, sustainability specialist, Siemens Gamesa. “The commissioning of the REM Energy is a strong signal highlighting the availability of clean technology to facilitate operation without emissions. Governments, industry and investors now need to partner up quickly to ramp up a green hydrogen infrastructure to facilitate the decarbonization of marine shipping.”
