Three of Japan’s major marine engine manufacturers, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Yanmar Power Technology and Japan Engine Corporation, have concluded a joint venture contract with the establishment of a new company, HyEng Corporation, to be headed by president Seiji Shindo.
With a view to contributing to decarbonization in Japan and promoting development of the shipbuilding and maritime industry, the new company will act as a vehicle with which the collaborators will pursue joint development of marine hydrogen-fueled engines.
This will involve the development of basic hydrogen engine technology alongside establishing international standards and rules for hydrogen fuel supply systems and the integration of said systems into marine applications. The new company will also conduct maintenance and operation of hydrogen fuel engine demonstration facilities.
Each partner company will lend a different area of expertise. Kawasaki Heavy Industries will develop medium-speed four-stroke engines, Yanmar Power Technology will focus on medium- and high-speed four-stroke engines, and Japan Engine Corporation will embark on the development of low-speed two-stroke engines.
