MAN Cryo wins order for hybrid gas-battery propulsion system

MAN Cryo – MAN Energy Solutions’ marine LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer – has announced that it will supply an LNG fuel-gas-supply system to a Norwegian live-fish carrier ordered by Nordlaks, one of Norway’s largest aquaculture companies. The new vessel will be a sister to an identical vessel ordered during the summer of 2018 – again for Nordlaks – for which MAN Cryo also won the order to provide the fuel-supply system. The system forms part of a hybrid gas-battery propulsion solution – a first for the segment. Designed by NSK in Norway, the sister vessels will be built at Tersan Shipyard in Turkey. Tersan has, over the years, built a number of LNG-powered vessels and this will be the fifth since 2016 equipped with a marine fuel-gas system delivered by MAN Cryo. Louise Andersson, head of MAN Cryo, said: “These orders mark our entry into a new marine segment with its own unique demands. Nordlaks’ interest in exploiting sustainable technology fits seamlessly with our ambition to become a leading supplier within sectors where there is a growing demand for LNG-fueled solutions. We are very pleased with this order from Tersan and look forward to continuing our cooperation with such a valued customer.” MAN Cryo’s scope of supply for each vessel includes two vertical vacuum-insulated 146-m3 LNG tanks, each with two redundant tank connecting spaces; two BS100-GR bunker stations; and two HEU 100 glycol heat exchanger units. Upon construction, the vessels will each have a length of 84.25m, a breadth of 19m, and will be capable of transporting over 600 tons of live fish, particularly salmon and trout. The carriers are designed for operation at aquaculture facilities in more exposed waters and delivery of the latest vessel is expected during 2021.
