Arc joins Maritime Battery Forum

Arc, a USA-based marine technology company developing electric and hybrid-electric propulsion vessels, has joined the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF), a global industry group focused on maritime battery technology.

Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Los Angeles, Arc designs its battery systems, powertrain, thermal management and software in-house, building what it describes as a fully integrated electric propulsion platform. The company’s technology currently powers recreational boats and is expanding into commercial and government vessels, including ferries, tugboats, workboats and defense applications.

Arc said its early products, the Arc One and Arc Sport, were built around batteries as a core engineering discipline rather than a bought-in component, an approach that has carried through to its later commercial work.

The company is currently developing a fleet of eight electric tugboats for deployment at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which it describes as one of the largest electric workboat initiatives in North America. The propulsion system for the first tugboat has already been certified, and Arc said the program is informing further work across its commercial and government vessel portfolio.

Arc was founded by engineers with backgrounds in the aerospace and automotive industries. The company said its integrated hardware-and-software model gives it insight into battery safety, packaging, thermal management and manufacturing that it plans to share with other MBF members.

“Batteries are the foundation of what we build at Arc, from our recreational boats to commercial vessels like our electric tugboats,” said Ryan Cook, Arc CTO and co-founder. “Because we design and deploy complete systems in-house, we’ve had to solve real, hard problems around safety, reliability, and packaging in demanding maritime environments.

“We’re excited to join the Maritime Battery Forum to share what we’ve learned and to work alongside the broader community as the industry moves toward a cleaner, more electric future.”
