Echandia launches LTO battery system to address upfront cost barrier

Echandia has launched a new marine battery system designed for demanding fully electric and hybrid marine applications.

The Echandia Core battery system is built on lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) technology and, Echandia says, delivers the safety, lifetime and predictable performance of LTO with a significantly lower upfront investment and smaller installation footprint.

Described as the “most important product launch” in the company’s history, Echandia Core has been developed to address one of the main barriers to wider LTO adoption across the maritime industry: the initial investment.

Compared with Echandia’s previous battery system, it is said to deliver 30% lower upfront cost and a 30% smaller footprint, while preserving the safety, lifetime and reliability that make LTO especially well-suited for demanding marine operations.

Magnus Eriksson, CEO of Echandia, said, “LTO has always made a very strong case when you look at total cost of ownership. Its long lifetime, fast charge and discharge capability, and low degradation are exactly what many marine operators need. What we are doing with Echandia Core is lowering the upfront cost barrier, so more projects can access those lifecycle benefits from day one.”

Echandia Core is designed for both fully electric propulsion and demanding hybrid applications, including spinning reserve, peak shaving, backup power and load leveling.

Felix Backgård, head of technical sales at Echandia, said the new system does not replace the company’s existing platforms Echandia Ultra and Echandia Robust.

‘Some vessels still need the highest-performance system we can build. Others need a more cost-efficient way to access the safety, lifetime and reliability of LTO. Echandia Core gives them that choice,” he said.
