Echandia to supply battery system for a second emission-free high-speed catamaran

Developer of heavy-duty energy solutions Echandia has received a second order from Green City Ferries that will see the company providing a highly specialized battery energy solution for a second Beluga24 vessel.

The order for the fully emission-free, high-speed, carbon-fiber catamaran consists of a 730kWh installation that has been optimized for high-speed commuting, with charging points on both ends of the route. The vessel will begin transporting commuters between Täby and Ropsten in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2024. Another vessel powered by an integrated battery and hydrogen-based fuel cell system will serve a route in the archipelago of Österåker.

At a speed of 30kts, the energy consumption of the Beluga24 vessel will be approximately half of its diesel-powered counterparts. Echandia predicts that the battery-powered catamaran will abate 2,000 tons of CO2 each year. With a capacity of 147 passengers and 28 bikes, the vessel’s expected usage will be 0.2kWh per nautical mile, per passenger.

Echandia believes the project will not only reduce emissions in Stockholm’s waterways but will also pioneer emission-free high-speed transportation for other cities around the world.
