ClassNK has granted approval in principle (AiP) to the ammonia fuel supply system on board an oil tanker and containership developed by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). ClassNK previously issued its Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels as a standard to reduce the risks associated with the use of the fuel, which is increasing because ammonia does not emit CO2 when combusted.
To ensure SHI’s vessel and fuel supply system design complied with ClassNK’s guidelines, the classification society conducted a review of the conceptual design based on part C of the previously mentioned ammonia standard before granting the AiP.
“We are happy to collaborate with ClassNK in this important design development and believe this AiP award demonstrates SHI’s readiness for the new ammonia shipping market that is coming from global decarbonization demands,” said Dong-Joo Kim, head of the shipbuilding sales engineering team at Samsung Heavy Industries.
