Wärtsilä becomes Mission Ambassador for zero carbon shipping research and development center

An ongoing project partnership between Wärtsilä and the Mӕrsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has been strengthened with Wärtsilä signing to become the official Mission Ambassador.

The Mӕrsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is a not-for-profit research and development center that seeks to accelerate the transition to a net-zero maritime future. Working in collaboration with several partners, the center pushes the development and introduction of new, clean and sustainable technologies while working to grow confidence in new concepts and mature viable strategic ways to achieve systemic and regulatory changes within the maritime sector.

Wärtsilä has worked previously with the center as a project partner on the NoGAPS project which was created to develop a Nordic-based concept for an ammonia-powered gas carrier vessel that would transport ammonia and use it as a zero-emission fuel. Wartsila is continuing to work on this project (under the name NoGAPS 2) and is currently developing the design of the vessel with an initial design package estimated to be finalized before the end of 2022.

With an estimated 100,000 commercial vessels consuming approximately 300 million tons of fuel each year, resulting in the shipping industry accounting for 3% of global carbon emissions, the Center seeks to decarbonize the marine sector by 2050 through new forms of research, regulatory reform and collaboration with like-minded companies.

“Collaboration remains key in accelerating the decarbonization transformation of our maritime industry,” said Roger Holm, president, Wärtsilä Marine Power. “In joining the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping as Mission Ambassador, Wärtsilä opens for collaboration between not only maritime stakeholders, but also fuel providers, universities and governments. Uniting expertise through this forum will undoubtedly drive a stronger shipping industry; one in which compliance is achievable, sustainable and profitable – for many generations to come.”
