Wärtsilä’s latest engine platform selected for Erik Thun tankers

Four new 7,999 DWT chemical tankers being built for Erik Thun will feature Wärtsilä’s latest medium-speed, four-stroke Wärtsilä 25 engines, which are capable of running on clean future-fuels.

Due to the Wärtsilä 25’s fuel flexibility, vessels using the engine will be ahead of the curve as fully decarbonized operations are introduced. Additional benefits of the maritime powertrain include excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions.

The tankers will be built at the Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands, and Wärtsilä will start to deliver the equipment to the yard in Q4 2024, with the first of the four ships scheduled for delivery in the middle of 2025.

“Decarbonization is a key driver for our operations. It makes total sense, therefore, for us to select the Wärtsilä 25 engine,” said Henrik Källsson, deputy managing director, Erik Thun. “We recognise the reliability, fuel efficiency and compact design of the engine, and the option to operate with clean future fuels is very important to us. We are impressed with the investments Wärtsilä is making by developing these very modern and futureproof engines. We believe the Wärtsilä 25 is the world’s most advanced engine in the 2,000kW range.”

“We have had a long-term partnership with Wärtsilä and have developed a mutual trust over the years,” commented Patrick Kuiper, mechanical designer, Ferus Smit. “We appreciate their brave approach in enabling the marine industry to achieve decarbonization via these new engines that are capable of being converted to run on alternative fuels.”
