EXPO NEWS Day 2: Endothermic thrusters

CMD (Booth 4060) is presenting two diesel-electric hybrid engines at this year’s Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe in Amsterdam.

Both endothermic thrusters are equipped with the BHS (Blue Hybrid System), a marine hybrid system entirely designed and developed by CMD, which makes it possible to have two navigation modes (endothermic and electric) which, although independent of each other, are managed by a single control system. BHS components include an electric motor, control electronics and battery pack.

CMD is able to craft a tailor-made solution for each type of engine, each of which will be optimized for the specific needs for which it is intended, through measures both for assembly and for customized software solutions.

The entire powertrain, internal combustion engine and BHS allows navigation without emissions and at low speeds in electric mode and, at the same time, more powerful navigation, capable of also managing the recharging of the battery pack, in endothermic mode.

The hybrid engine, based on the D4 Volvo Penta, is the result of a collaboration between the Italian company Ing. Ruggero Vio and CMD, which has developed a solution specifically for sustainable navigation within the city of Venice. The BHS hybrid engines have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand for applications that can be adopted in marine protected areas, lagoon areas and navigable canals found across Europe.

“Our more than ten years of experience and the skills developed in the design of hybrid and electric systems allow us to also offer other solutions adaptable to different types of marine engines,” Giorgio Negri, sales manager, CMD, told Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology International on Day 2 of the show.
