EXPO NEWS | DAY 2: Ultra-high-energy battery system

BorgWarner is displaying an ultra-high-energy battery system for power-intensive applications operating at up to 750V at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo. The system is based on a cylindrical cell module containing 600 Li-ion cells, which achieves an energy density of 221Wh/kg. Nine modules are series-connected to create a 9AKM battery pack providing 98kWh. Production of a smaller 6AKM battery pack is planned; a combination of both pack sizes could be configured to make best use of available installation space.

Safe operation in service was a key objective during development, with active and passive safety devices integrated at the module and battery pack levels to prevent fire or explosion hazards. Each cylindrical cell is physically separated from the next and potted to prevent combustion should a thermal event occur; the wire bonds connecting cells to the PCBs act as fuses in the event of a short circuit. The pack is robustly constructed and housed in stainless steel for impact protection and corrosion resistance.

Measuring 1,720 x 700 x 300mm and weighing 560kg, with a life of up to 4,000 cycles, BorgWarner’s ultra-high-energy battery pack is a cost-effective solution for applications where space is limited and low weight contributes to optimal performance and range.
