Baumüller Anlagen-Systemtechnik, the German automation and engineering company, has designed and equipped a Danish ferry with a complete hybrid system.
Bringing its expertise to the ferry’s power and propulsion systems, Baumüller opted for a diesel-hybrid configuration and specified the diesel generator engine, propeller and bow thruster drives, power distribution and onboard power-generation systems, with the vessel requiring parts developed especially for this application.
The diesel-electric hybrid system is configured so that the diesel engines are used only as range-extenders, and enables the ferry to operate solely on battery power when in port, delivering a significant reduction in emissions compared with existing craft. The new design is also capable of 11kts, giving a crossing time from Æro to Rudkøbing of 45 minutes, while the hybrid powertrain also delivers low vibrations and good maneuverability at low speeds.
