Corvus Energy supplies advanced clean marine technology

Corvus Energy is set to supply an advanced energy storage system for Damen Shipyards’ four new battery-hybrid ferries, headed to Canada to be used by BC Ferries.

As the leading manufacturer of maritime energy storage systems, Corvus provides more ferries with battery power than all other companies combined, having recently been selected to offer energy storage systems (ESS) for 60 similar hybrid and all-electric car ferries around the world.

The new systems are an excellent environmentally friendly fit for vessels that cover only short distances, thanks to their ability to operate in both hybrid and all-electric settings.

The Damen Shipyards ferries are fitted with the latest in Corvus’s clean marine tech, and are fully prepared to be 100% battery powered, meaning zero-emissions operation will be possible in the future. Until these completely electric charging options are made available, the four ferries will run on a low sulfur diesel generator that provides power to a battery-hybrid system.

BC Ferries president and CEO Mark Collins said, “Our Clean Futures Plan spells out our strategy to reduce GHG emissions by replacing legacy carbon-intensive fossil-fueled vessels with ships using clean energy.”

The first two vessels are scheduled to come into service midway through 2020, while a further four are set to be delivered in 2022.
