Green NortH2 Energy, Meriaura and Wärtsilä to collaborate on green ammonia cargo vessel

Green NortH2 Energy, Meriaura and Wärtsilä have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to build a cargo vessel capable of running on green ammonia.

Ordered and set to be operated by Meriaura, the proposed vessel will benefit from Wärtsilä’s modular multifuel main engines; Green NortH2 Energy will supply green ammonia fuel produced using renewable electricity. The cargo ship will also be able to run on bio-oil or marine diesel oil.

Upon entering service, the vessel will be used in the heavy project cargo sector alongside Meriaura’s current open-deck carriers.

“This is a natural step in Meriaura’s future fleet portfolio, complementing the fuel mix together with our in-house biofuel (LBO) production,” explained Jussi Mälkiä, chairman of Meriaura. “This collaboration supports our ongoing new-building program and carbon neutrality goals.”

“The contract shows the significance of our green energy project,” said Jussi Ylinen, CEO of Green NortH2 Energy. “We are very happy to join forces with such outstanding partners. This is a great way to speed up the green transition, which is no longer a utopia but a reality.”

The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2024, with plans to operate using green ammonia from 2026.
