Hybrid Fjord1 ferries to receive Brunvoll systems

Brunvoll and Tersan Shipyard have signed a contract for the delivery of Brunvoll’s azimuth propulsion units and control systems to enable the autonomous operation of two Fjord1 electric double-ended shuttle ferries.

Designed by HAV Design, the ferries feature battery propulsion systems with fast charging capability for shoreside charging when docking. A diesel-electric backup enables the vessels to operate in battery, hybrid or diesel-electric modes.

The ferries will service routes between Stranda and Liabygda, and Eidsdal and Linge in Norway.

“This once again confirms our position as a preferred partner for modern eco-friendly ferries,” commented Bernt Rune Riksfjord, sales manager for shuttle ferries at Brunvoll. “Brunvoll’s azimuth propulsion thrusters designed for high operational efficiency and low energy consumption, together with our in-house hydrodynamics capabilities, enable us to provide units highly optimized for these vessels.”

In addition to the azimuth propulsion units, Brunvoll will supply the ferries with its new Auto-Crossing system to enable autonomous operation.

“Brunvoll has invested significantly in developing autonomous solutions in recent years and we are very excited about these two new vessels,” said Knut Andresen, the company’s EVP of product development and engineering. “Our propulsion and maneuvering units support most motor technologies, but we see that electrical is increasingly popular, often driven by the use of batteries or hybrid energy sources.

“We believe that to fully energy-optimize vessel operation, autonomy and datalogging are critical functions. Thus, we are looking forward to developing this further with Fjord1 on two local ferry routes.”
