Newport Shipping launches design house for environmentally friendly vessels

The Naval Architect Vessel (NAV) design house for environmentally friendly vessels has been launched by Newport Shipping. The new company is set to design eight hybrid-powered crew transfer vessels (CTVs) with delivery commencing in summer 2024.

The CTVs will be designed and operated by NAV and, according to the company, they will be a “brand-new concept in vessel design and construction”, designed for “high-efficiency utility and adaptability”.

The vessel concept will be a 26m hybrid offshore CTV with a 9.20m beam, 3.75m/4.75m depth, a 1.45m design draft, a 1.60m scantling draft and 40 metric ton deadweight. It is expected to have a max speed of 30kts (@25% DWT), an 80m2 deck area, and a 2.0t/m2 deck load. It is to take 12/24 industrial personnel, 35m3 of fuel and 9m3 of freshwater. Furthermore, it will have 10m3 of miscellaneous capacity leftover.

The IMO Tier-III compliant vessels will be constructed at Cicek Shipyard in Tuzla Bay, Turkey. Delivery of the first new-build is expected in July 2024 with subsequent delivery every two months. The last delivery is expected in September 2025. By the end of 2025, NAV aims to establish a mid-size CTV tonnage supplier for the wind offshore Industry. It is envisaged that the vessels will be chartered out.

The company also is in the process of establishing a service-driven offshore crew transfer vessel (CTV) operator in the wind offshore market, focusing on the North and Baltic Sea trading areas. For this venture, it is looking for a strategic equity partner in order to become a medium size tonnage supplier for the industry.

Ingmar Loges, founding partner of NAV, commented, “This is a logical next step in our business approach. We cater to the ship repair and retrofit market, but at the heart of what we do is good engineering. For us, it was a natural move to develop in this area and to evolve the developing expertise that we have in the future.

“The offshore wind market with its positive dynamics is the world’s fastest growing energy source. In the first step, we concentrate on CTV designs due to the fact that these vessels will always be the backbone of the offshore wind logistics infrastructure. Our vessel designs offer maximum flexibility while meeting future demands of environmental regulations. This is where we can help the market to take the next step to more environmentally friendly and efficient vessels. The bonus is that we can also offer this for a competitive price.”
