Diesel-electric cruise ship floated out of dry dock

The second of three next-generation cruise ships set for the Swan Hellenic fleet has been floated out of its dry dock.

The SH Vega has been designed to comply with the very latest emissions standards to ensure a minimal impact on the environment when operating in areas of environmental importance such as the Antarctic.

The vessel features a 4.6MW diesel-electric hybrid-ready propulsion system with selective catalytic reduction. Furthermore, the ship has been futureproofed and is battery-ready for zero-emission, noise-free sailing in wildlife and marine reserves, and also in and out of ports.

Measuring 113m-long, the 10,500 GRT cruise ship benefits from a PC5 ice-strengthened hull that has been fully Safe Return to Port certified.

Swan Hellenic is set to take delivery of the SH Vega in May 2022, ahead of its 11-day maiden voyage starting on May 29, 2022.

“SH Vega is a next-generation ship that advances the Swan Hellenic cultural expedition cruising tradition in the inspired mold of her sister ship,” commented Simo Rastas, the CEO of Helsinki Shipyard. “We are very proud of our contribution to everything she represents.”

“We are again delighted with the quality of Helsinki’s work,” said Andrea Zito, the CEO of Swan Hellenic. “Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, everyone at the shipyard has maintained an ambitious schedule to the very highest standards.”
