Shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced that its group company MOL Drybulk will begin sea trials of a Panamax bulk carrier using biofuel, beginning in late June 2022.

Having signed a deal for biofuel supply, Chevron Singapore will supply MOL Drybulk and the vessel with approximately 500 tons of International Sustainability & Carbon Certification certified biofuel, which will be bunkered on the vessel at the Port of Singapore.

Chartered from Chugoku Sougyo, the vessel – named C.S. Olive – will be supplied with a biofuel that includes used cooking oil methyl ester as a 20-24% component of the VLSFO (very-low-sulfur fuel oil).

The biofuel can be used on vessels without changing engine specifications and is expected to decrease exhausted CO2  by an estimated 15-20% based on lifecycle analysis.
