Trondheim Port commissions power exchange with NG3 PLUG

The Port of Trondheim has commissioned NG3 to install its quayside PLUG (Power Generation during Loading and Unloading) interface to help reduce emissions of the Kystruten RopA service, currently operated by Havila and Hurtigruten vessels on the west coast of Norway. The power exchange will be capable of supporting a current of up to 2,000A at 1,000V.

To meet the requirements of the Trondheim port and other ports on the vessel’s route, NG3 has developed a winterized solution (compliant with CE requirements) to protect the system from extreme weather such as wind or snow.

The charging system has been built as part of a mobile tower and can fit within a standard 40ft container to aid in port logistics. When required, the tower is aligned with a ship’s side PLUG interface to provide power, while a platform inside moves vertically to deal with tides or vessel movement. The platform design also enables the solution to charge vessels with a range of differing deck designs.

In addition to covering hotel loads, the shore power solution will also be used to charge the batteries of four Havila hybrid propulsion ro-pax vessels.
