China has completed tests on its first all-electric container ship, in Ningbo, Zhejiang province. It is said to be the largest vessel of its kind in the world.

The Ning Yuan Dian Kun has a reported capacity of 740 TEUs, and was independently developed and designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute. The electric propulsion system was provided by the Shanghai Marine Equipment Research Institute.

With a length of 127.8m and a width of 21.6m, the ship has been built for Ningbo Ocean Shipping and will operate on the coastal shipping route between Ningbo and Jiaxing in Zhejiang province.

The Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and the Shanghai Marine Equipment Research Institute are subsidiaries of the China State Shipbuilding Corp.
