German yacht builder YYachts has started construction of its first hybrid-powered Y8, marking the introduction of hybrid propulsion to the company’s 80ft performance cruiser range.

The Y8 will be equipped with a Yanmar hybrid drive system combining a conventional diesel engine with an electric motor. The configuration enables the yacht to operate in electric-only mode using lithium battery power, in addition to standard diesel propulsion.

According to YYachts, the system can be charged via shore power while in port or through onboard solar panels. The diesel engine is compatible with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), enabling reduced CO₂ emissions compared with conventional marine diesel.

In electric “silent mode,” the yacht operates with reduced noise and vibration, a feature intended to support access to emission-restricted anchorages and environmentally sensitive cruising areas.

A Yanmar touch display provides real-time monitoring of propulsion mode, battery status and energy flow through a single interface.

The hybrid Y8 builds on an existing model developed in collaboration with Surge Projects, the studio of naval architect Javier Jaudenes, and features interior design by David Thulstrup. Naval architecture elements include a widened stern, an aft-positioned mast and carbon epoxy sandwich construction aimed at balancing performance and structural rigidity.

“The first Y8 equipped with an advanced hybrid propulsion system has officially entered production – marking a defining milestone in YYachts’ journey toward more intelligent, more sustainable sailing,” the company said in a statement.

Design features include a self-tacking jib, double rudder system and a transverse tender garage. Interior layouts can be configured for either crew-separated long-range cruising or open-plan family use.

YYachts said the project reflects its view that performance sailing and lower-emission propulsion are not mutually exclusive, positioning the hybrid Y8 as an evolution of its existing performance-focused platform rather than a separate model line.
